Afghan Election Results

I developed this results progress visualization and delivery solution for the Joint Electoral Management Body (JEMB) while on contract with the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) during 2005.

I was the Deputy Head of Comms and IT but as you can see, I was still very hands-on both in terms of developing some solutions myself and by coordinating the team of developers who delivered the other technology solutions designed to support the  2005 Wolesi Jirga and Provincial Council Elections.

There was a requirement that this site support English, Dari, and Pashto at a time when Microsoft SQL Server did not officially support Pashto. Our team developed a set of custom components to add this functionality and we were able to deliver both the website and the final results reports on time and in all three languages.

For the three weeks between polling day and the announcement of the last final results report, the map on this website's homepage was color coded with the progress of counting and results for each election in each Afghan province.

From this website you:

Internally, the electoral commission could:

  • give priority advanced access to internal staff and select partners
  • export the data to common exchange formats

The JEMB was dissolved and a new election commission exists in Afghanistan. As such, external links to other dissolved bodies may exist but all of the results related site functionality is present.

Media Center Mode

The stage for the media center where press conferences were held used screens as backdrops. On those screens, several different slideshows and presentations rotated including the results site in a media center mode (sans any navigation or other irrelevant site elements).
